Every spring, the Fontvieille fairground and the covered market halls of Place Fernand Arnaud host a popular car boot sale that brings together between 50 and 100 exhibitors, both private and professional. Fontvieille is a Provençal village of 3,500 inhabitants nestled at the foot of the Alpilles, ten kilometers from Arles. It owes its fame to the famous Daudet Mill, officially the Moulin Ribet, built in 1814 and immortalized by Alphonse Daudet in his Letters from My Windmill published in 1869. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1931, the mill has housed a museum dedicated to the writer since 1935. Browsing at the Fontvieille car boot sale is also an opportunity to discover this unique literary heritage in Provence.
Beyond the mill, Fontvieille holds exceptional ancient heritage. The Roman quarries provided the cut stone that built Arles and its monuments. The Barbegal aqueduct and mill complex, dating from the 2nd century, is the largest complex of watermills in the Roman world, with 16 cascading wheels capable of producing 25 tons of flour per day. These remains, located a few minutes from the village, make Fontvieille a must-visit for history and archaeology enthusiasts.
