Bargain hunting in a medieval Quercy bastide
Caylus's flea market and brocante spreads its stalls through the lanes of one of Quercy's finest bastides, around the Place de la Mairie and the rue droite. Between 50 and 100 private and professional sellers offer antiques, brocante and bric-Γ -brac in the outstanding heritage setting of the south Causse de Limogne.
Caylus, a 13th-century royal bastide, hosts its annual flea market and brocante around the Place de la Mairie and the rue droite, the village's historic main street. The setting is striking: half-timbered houses, medieval covered market, Saint-Jean-Baptiste church with its porch tower, and in the distance the limestone cliffs of the Bonnette gorges. This fourth edition in the current format confirms its place in the regional calendar.
The format mixes private sellers clearing their attics with professional dealers, broadening the offer considerably. Visitors find the classic flea market mix (crockery, clothing, toys, books) alongside genuine brocante pieces: rustic Quercy oak furniture, paintings, old signs, earthenware, farm tools, militaria, vinyl records, comics. The accessible rate (β¬2 per linear metre) attracts sellers from neighbouring departments (Lot, Aveyron, Tarn).
From 8 AM to 6 PM, the streets are closed to traffic and given over to bargain hunters. The covered market shelters some of the stalls, providing protection from rain or strong sun. Refreshments and meals are run by the organising committee, often with local specialities.
Caylus alone is worth the trip: medieval covered market, Maison des Loups, former Cordeliers convent, Pierre Caillou art museum, and the natural swimming spot at the Labarthe lake nearby. The village is also a stop on the Route des Bastides.
Park at the village entrances and walk down to the centre. Bring cash, a sturdy bag, and good shoes for the cobbles. The best pieces often go in the first two hours.
