Château de Ternay is in Berrie, northwest Vienne, Loudunais. A remarkable edifice blending medieval, Renaissance, 17th and 18th-century elements, kept alive by the Amis du Château de Ternay association which runs events to raise funds for its upkeep. Originality lies entirely in the setting. Few chine events enjoy such staging: stalls in courts and gardens, sometimes under old vaults, visitors wandering between heritage and brocante. Les Amis du Château de Ternay

Critical to the monument's preservation and animation. Without such associations, many private castles couldn't maintain programming or fund the permanent upkeep an old building requires. Their volunteer work keeps Ternay alive and partially open to the public through these events.

Berrie and the Loudunais

Berrie is a 500-inhabitant rural commune in north Loudunais, bordering Touraine. Deep rural character, bocage, modest but authentic heritage. Loudunais — organised around Loudun — is an underrated Vienne area with rich history. Beyond Ternay, several other châteaux and manors dot the region.

Arrive early for best finds and enjoy the château quietly. Comfortable shoes (yards, gardens, mixed floors). March: warm and possibly waterproof clothing. On-site refreshments some years.
