Annual car boot sale in the village of Artigat, land of the Martin Guerre affair
The annual car boot sale of Artigat (09130) is held in this village of 574 inhabitants nestled at 265 meters altitude in the Lèze valley, 14 km northwest of Pamiers. Artigat is world-famous for the Martin Guerre affair, this mysterious 16th-century impostor whose story inspired novels, films, and plays. The annual car boot sale brings together local exhibitors and visitors in this charming village of the Arize-Lèze Community of Communes, perpetuating the tradition of popular gatherings in this commune with a rich historical past.
In the Lèze valley, 14 kilometers northwest of Pamiers, the village of Artigat hosts its annual car boot sale. This popular event brings together exhibitors and visitors in this village of 574 inhabitants, made world-famous by one of the most extraordinary legal cases in French history: the Martin Guerre affair.
Artigat (09130) is inseparable from the story of Martin Guerre, a peasant from Ariège who disappeared in the 16th century and whose identity was usurped for years by an impostor – Arnaud du Tilh, known as « Pansette » – who married his wife Bertrande de Rols and managed his property. The case, tried in Toulouse in 1560, resulted in the impostor's death sentence and represents one of the most fascinating cases of pre-modern identity theft.
This affair inspired the historical novel by Natalie Zemon Davis (Le Retour de Martin Guerre, 1982), the eponymous film by Daniel Vigne (1982) starring Gérard Depardieu and Nathalie Baye, as well as numerous plays and adaptations worldwide. Artigat is thus a village of universal memory, rooted in the rural history of Ariège.
The village belongs to the Arize-Lèze Community of Communes and underwent administrative transfer in 2017, moving from the arrondissement of Pamiers to that of Saint-Girons. Two churches bear witness to the ancient settlement: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption.
The Artigat car boot sale benefits from the bucolic setting of the Lèze valley, a river that flows through the commune and its meadows. Private sellers offer a typical selection of treasures from Ariège attics: vintage clothing and linens, crockery, rural furniture, agricultural tools, books and magazines, trinkets. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, reflecting the endearing simplicity of village car boot sales in Ariège.
A visit to the car boot sale can be part of a discovery of the Ariège plain. Pamiers, 14 km away, is the main town on the plain with its market, cathedral, and shops. The ruined castle of Lagarde, romantically set in the surrounding area, recalls the Wars of Religion. Hiking trails in the Bélesta forest offer beautiful walks in all seasons.
The car boot sale is held in Artigat (09130). Free entry for visitors. Information available from the Artigat town hall.
