What is a Gratiferia?

'Gratiferia' (Spanish) literally means 'free market'. A solidarity event based on the gift principle: bring items you no longer need (in good condition), leave them, take what you need — all with no money, no barter. Gratiferias promote ecology, anti-consumerism and community ties. They have been growing in France over the last decade, with a strong echo in associative and activist circles.

In Tourves, the Spring Gratiferia is organised each year by a local association with municipal support. 2024 edition: Saturday 8 June 2024 — late-spring timing when gardens bloom and attics empty. Attracts eco-conscious visitors and curious newcomers alike.

What to find

A well-stocked Gratiferia has roughly everything a flea market offers: clothes, crockery, books, toys, small furniture, kitchenware, decor. The difference is the atmosphere: conviviality, talk, swap of tips and recipes. Some Gratiferias add repair, sewing or DIY workshops.

An atypical activist event

Tourves Gratiferia is more than a flea market: it carries political and social weight. It questions consumption, ownership and exchange. For many, a first experience of giving freely; for regulars, a yearly ritual strengthening community bonds.

Access

From A8 (Saint-Maximin or Brignoles exit) via N7. Park in village streets. For a successful Gratiferia: bring clean, working items, respect the sharing spirit, chat with others. Atmosphere is usually very warm.
