Where soapbox cars race down the streets and bargain hunters fill the pavements
Mauléon, a charming commune in the north of Deux-Sèvres on the edge of the Bressuire bocage, hosts an annual event like no other: a soapbox car race combined with a flea market. This double event, driven by the enthusiasm of the Savonnettes Mauléonnaises, attracts large family crowds who come both for the spectacular descents and the flea market bargains.
From 11am to 8pm, Rue du Château Gaillard transforms into a downhill circuit for handmade vehicles, each more original than the last. Participants compete in creativity to build their soapbox cars, focusing on aesthetics and humour as much as performance. The audience can admire the creations, vote for the most beautiful designs and cheer on the drivers during their wild descents.
From 8am to 6pm, the free flea market sets up alongside the race course. Private sellers offer everyday items: clothing, toys, books, crockery, ornaments and small antiques. The combination of both events creates a uniquely festive atmosphere.
A former stronghold of Poitou, Mauléon still bears the remains of its medieval castle and boasts rich architectural heritage. The commune, nestled in the Bressuire bocage, is also known for its dynamic community life.
