The little 1 May bargain hunt in the Carmaux Ségala
A tiny commune of barely 200 inhabitants within the Carmausin-Ségala community of communes, Salles sits between Cordes-sur-Ciel, Monestiés and Virac, 19 km north-west of Albi. This quiet village, which retains the full charm of the Tarn's rural hamlets, runs a small-scale flea market every 1 May that has become a cherished date for locals and nearby bargain hunters. It's exactly the kind of flea market you love to stumble upon on a detour: unpretentious, affordable, with the spirit of real Sunday brocante enthusiasts.
Exhibitors are almost exclusively private sellers from the village and nearby farms: crockery, clothes, toys, books, comics, vinyl records, baby items, tools, small furniture, trinkets, decor and family bric-a-brac. True gems are plenty in this kind of rural flea market, where you sometimes find old farm tools, folk art pieces, vintage tableware or hand-embroidered linen. Prices stay very gentle, in the pure "village flea market" spirit.
On 1 May in Salles, it's first and foremost a neighbourhood celebration. Stands set up around the town hall and in the village streets, residents move from one pitch to the next, chat and linger at the refreshment stand run by volunteers. Light catering on site extends the afternoon, and the overall atmosphere is that precious, relaxed, smiling and sincere feel of the Tarn countryside.
Salles sits ideally for combining the flea market with a day exploring the Tarn Ségala. Cordes-sur-Ciel, one of the most spectacular medieval cities in Occitanie, is 10 minutes away. Monestiés, another of France's Most Beautiful Villages, is less than a quarter of an hour away. Plenty for a lovely 1 May outing mixing bargain hunting, heritage and Tarn back roads.
Salles is 19 km north-west of Albi and 10 km from Cordes-sur-Ciel, via small departmental roads. Parking in the village.
