The traditional May 1st flea market on rue de Verdun
Every 1 May, Sallertaine livens up with its traditional flea market on rue de Verdun at the former football pitch. Private sellers only, drawing around 100 sellers and bargain-hunters from Challans, Saint-Jean-de-Monts, Machecoul and the whole northern marshes area. One of the first major flea markets of the Vendée season.
A particularly relaxed family atmosphere typical of village events. Sellers set up at dawn for a day lasting into mid-afternoon.
About 3,400 inhabitants, 6 km south of Challans, at the heart of the northern Vendée marshes. Classified "Village of Painters and Sculptors", home to many artists with year-round open workshops. Chauvet island, Tannivières chapel and surrounding canals form a rich heritage.
Known for canoe and yole trips on the marsh canals, and the Moulin de Rairé, one of France's few still-working windmills.
Arrive from 8am for best finds. Snack on site or enjoy the refreshments. Extend your visit with the medieval centre, artist workshops, Saint-Martin church, or a canoe trip.
