Amicale Laïque of Saint-Prouant flea market
Saint-Prouant is a ~1,600 inhabitant village, Pays de Chantonnay, between Chantonnay and Pouzauges in the high Vendée bocage. Its flea market, run by the Amicale Laïque each spring, is a major community event. 2026: Sunday 22 March.
The Amicale Laïque is an iconic figure of French school life: it supports the public school, runs extra-curricular activities, and raises funds. Here it mobilises parents, teachers and locals.
At the edge of plain-bocage and Haut-Bocage: gentle hills, hedges, old farms, hamlets. Nice church, shops, active school, strong community life. Chassay-Grammont priory, old Cistercian monastery, nearby.
Beyond the market: shows, fair, Christmas tree, field trips. Reinforces the public school's central role.
22 March opens the Chantonnay area season. Bargain-hunters resume favourite activity after winter. Usually indoor (weather uncertain in late March).
Amicale runs drinks, light breakfast, sandwiches, homemade cakes. Profits go to school projects.
