Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez is one of the major Vendée coastal resorts, 11,000 year-round inhabitants and much higher summer tourism. Part of the Pays de Saint-Gilles, it stretches 14 km of coast with family beaches, pine forest, dunes and rural hinterland.

The annual flea market, 2026 edition around 16-17 May (Ascension long weekend), kicks off the tourist season. It brings together locals, year-round residents and early visitors in a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

A family resort

Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez is known for family beaches (Les Becs, Sion-sur-l'Océan, La Pelle à Porteau), campsites, state forest. Sion-sur-l'Océan village with its summer market and rocky corniche is one of the most picturesque corners. Rural hinterland with marshes and fishing villages.

Rich territory

Visit Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie fishing port (sardines!), wild forest beaches, salt marshes, or push to Notre-Dame-de-Monts and La Barre-de-Monts. The Côte de Lumière has some of western France's finest beaches.

Arrive early; sunscreen and water for sunny days; combine hunting and beach; lunch on a Sion-sur-l'Océan terrace.
