The annual village flea market in the Val de Somme
Every June, Tilloy-lès-Conty organises its annual réderie, a much-awaited bargain hunting event in this small village south of Amiens. True to Picard tradition, the réderie mobilises the inhabitants who open their attics, cellars and outbuildings to offer a varied selection to visitors. In a country and family atmosphere, this village réderie embodies the friendly spirit of rural events in the Somme.
The réderie is the Picard term for what is called elsewhere a vide-grenier or brocante: a gathering where the inhabitants of a village open their attics to sell items they no longer need. The word comes from the Picard 'réder', which evokes searching and rummaging. The Tilloy-lès-Conty réderie perpetuates this tradition rooted in the rural life of the Somme.
Tilloy-lès-Conty is a commune of around 500 inhabitants located some twenty kilometres south-west of Amiens, in the Selle valley. Between Conty and Poix-de-Picardie, the village spreads over rolling terrain typical of western Santerre.
At Tilloy-lès-Conty, the réderie retains that human dimension that makes the charm of village events. The exhibitors, almost exclusively private sellers, set up their stalls in front of their homes or on the central square, creating a winding bargain-hunting route that invites strolling.
The réderie is part of a local calendar rich in village events. In southern Amiens area, every Sunday in June and July, several neighbouring communes organise their own réderies, allowing bargain hunters to move from village to village.
As with most village réderies, a refreshment and catering point is set up by the organising association or festival committee. For those wishing to explore the surroundings, Conty and its Gothic church deserve a detour.
