The Picardy spring flea market in the heart of the village
The Réderia of Cavillon is an annual bargain hunting rendezvous that livens up the Place de la Mairie of this small Val de Somme village each spring. Organized in the purest Picardy tradition of the réderie, this friendly event gathers private sellers and curious visitors looking for good deals or simply sharing a festive moment in the heart of the Amiens countryside. A local event deeply rooted in the Somme territory.
The word "réderie" is a linguistic particularity of Northern France and more precisely of Picardy. Derived from the Picardy "rédeux" (one who rummages, who searches), it designates what is called elsewhere a flea market or vide-grenier. In Cavillon, a small village in Val de Somme, the Réderia perpetuates this popular tradition every spring, with the simplicity and human warmth that characterize country gatherings.
Place de la Mairie, the natural gathering point of Cavillon, welcomes exhibitors from the early hours of Sunday. Stalls are set up and very quickly the heart of the village becomes a vast open-air market. Bric-à-brac, tableware, books, toys, clothes, small furniture and old tools sit alongside the unusual objects that make the charm of rural réderies.
Cavillon is a rural commune located about twenty kilometres west of Amiens, in the Somme valley. With its few hundred inhabitants, its church and its Picardy farms, it embodies this quiet Picardy where traditions are passed down from generation to generation. The Réderia represents for the inhabitants a precious opportunity to meet and share a friendly moment.
Like most Picardy réderies, the Cavillon one is experienced as a family. Children stroll between stalls looking for a forgotten toy, grandparents comment on objects from their youth, and more seasoned hunters patiently rummage in boxes. The refreshment stand allows visitors to extend the pleasure throughout the day. Admission is free and the atmosphere relaxed.
To fully enjoy the Réderia, arrive early in the morning: that's when the finest objects change hands. Don't hesitate to chat with exhibitors, often village locals who love to tell the story of their items. Bring cash and a sturdy bag.
