Saint-Chaffrey, a commune in the Guisane valley integrated into the Serre-Chevalier resort, hosts two car boot sales per year, in June and September. These events mark the beginning and end of the summer season in Briançonnais.
Located at an altitude of approximately 1,350 meters, Saint-Chaffrey occupies a central position in the Guisane valley, between Briançon and the col du Lautaret. The commune is home to the Serre-Chevalier 1350 sector, with its ski lifts and slopes. In summer, the village regains a quieter atmosphere, conducive to markets and car boot sales. The village church, fountains, and traditional alleys form an authentic mountain setting.
Exhibitors offer a wide range of second-hand items: old crockery, trinkets, frames and mirrors, books and magazines, toys, clothing, small appliances, tools, sports equipment, vinyl records and CDs, home textiles, and decorative objects. In the Hautes-Alpes, you can also regularly find typical mountain items: old agricultural tools, cowbells, Savoyard furniture, vintage skis, snowshoes, and hiking equipment. Prices are generally very attractive, making these car boot sales an economical and ecological alternative to buying new.
The department of Hautes-Alpes, the least populated in metropolitan France, compensates for its low density with a particularly dynamic associative life. From March to October, car boot sales and flea markets punctuate the life of Alpine villages, offering as many opportunities to hunt for bargains as to get together with neighbors. The summer season, with the influx of tourists and holidaymakers, multiplies the opportunities: passing visitors willingly stop to rummage through the stalls, sometimes discovering unsuspected Alpine treasures. The exceptional mountain setting of the department adds a unique dimension to these events, with grandiose panoramas and pure mountain air.
The June car boot sale opens the summer season, while the September one closes it. The accessible rate of 2 euros per linear meter attracts both permanent residents, second-home owners, and holidaymakers looking for bargains in the mountains.
