The Pirey Car Boot Sale, a Solidarity Event in the Heart of the Besançon Agglomeration

Every year in May, the municipality of Pirey — a member of the Grand Besançon urban community — organizes one of the most popular car boot sales in the region. The Espace Saint-Exupéry, a large community complex that also houses the village school, is transformed for the occasion into a huge second-hand market bringing together nearly 180 private exhibitors.

The sales area extends over more than 1,000 m², combining covered areas and outdoor spaces around the center and the school grounds. This setup allows for a large number of exhibitors while offering visitors a varied and pleasant route, adapted to the sometimes unpredictable spring weather conditions of Franche-Comté.

A Car Boot Sale in Aid of the CHU of Besançon

What particularly distinguishes the Pirey car boot sale is its solidarity aspect. A portion of the proceeds — 1 euro per linear meter — is donated to the pediatric department of the CHU of Besançon. This initiative, led by the festival committee, makes this event much more than just a flea market: it is an act of collective generosity that has earned a good reputation among the residents of the agglomeration.

Exhibitors pay a fee of 5 euros per linear meter, with a minimum of 2 meters, which remains very affordable for individuals wishing to clear out their attics. The refreshment stand and light catering offered on site contribute to creating a festive and friendly atmosphere throughout the day, which runs from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Pirey, a Dynamic Town on the Outskirts of Besançon

Pirey is a town of nearly 2,000 inhabitants located immediately west of Besançon, on the plateau overlooking the Doubs valley. Although absorbed into the dynamic of the Besançon agglomeration, it retains a village identity and an active associative life, of which this annual car boot sale is one of the most visible manifestations. The Espace Saint-Exupéry, with its sports and cultural facilities, is the heart of local life and hosts the festival committee's activities throughout the year.
