The summer rendezvous for bibliophiles in a Quercy bastide
Every first Sunday of July, the Friends of the Library association hosts the Puylaroque (82240) book market at the village hall: second-hand books, comics, novels, art books, vinyl, CDs and DVDs at low prices. From 7:30am to 4pm, bibliophiles and readers gather in this Quercy caussadais bastide perched at 350 metres, in a relaxed cultural atmosphere.
Now firmly established, the Puylaroque book market gathers each first Sunday of July reading enthusiasts, bibliophiles and literature hunters. Organised by the Friends of the Municipal Library association, it fills the village hall and, in good weather, spreads outside. Proceeds fund the Puylaroque inter-municipal library.
About thirty exhibitors, private sellers and associations, display second-hand books in all genres: French and foreign novels, thrillers, sci-fi, children's books, comics, art and photography books, antique and bound books, practical books (cooking, gardening, travel), poetry, theatre, essays. Plus vinyl, CDs, DVDs and sometimes board games. Prices defy any competition — a few euros per book.
Far from the sometimes noisy buzz of a large flea market, the Puylaroque book market cultivates a calm, cultural atmosphere. People discuss readings, exchange recommendations, browse before buying. The bar run by the association complements the event with coffee, pastries, cold drinks and light snacks.
Puylaroque is a former royal bastide founded in the 13th century, perched at 350 metres on a promontory dominating the Bas-Quercy plateaux. From its fortified church Saint-Jacques (14th century, listed historic monument), its ramparts and medieval squares, the village offers exceptional panoramas over the Lère valley and as far as the Pyrenees on clear days.
Arrive early (from 7:30am) for the best finds. Bring sturdy bags and cash. Spend two to three hours browsing. Exhibitors register before 30 June at €3 per linear metre.
