The May Day rendezvous in the heart of Picard Santerre
The Dompierre-Becquincourt Flea Market is held every May 1st on the village square, in this Santerre commune marked by the history of the Great War. This annual event brings together private exhibitors and bargain hunters from neighboring villages, in a typically Picard village atmosphere.
Every May 1st, Dompierre-Becquincourt takes part in the great Picard tradition of réderies and flea markets on Labor Day. This small Somme commune, located on the Santerre plateau east of Amiens, opens its central square to exhibitors for a friendly day of bargain hunting.
Dompierre-Becquincourt is a commune resulting from the administrative merger of two neighboring villages. Located at the heart of the Santerre, the fertile agricultural plateau that stretches east of Amiens to the gates of Péronne, it was deeply marked by the First World War. Entirely destroyed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, it was rebuilt in the characteristic style of the 1920s.
Like most rural Picard flea markets, Dompierre-Becquincourt's is mainly staffed by private sellers. Clothing, toys, crockery, books, small furniture, tools, knick-knacks: the assortment is varied and prices affordable.
The atmosphere of the flea market reflects that of the warm villages of the Santerre. Neighbors meet, children stroll between stands, and bargain hunters from neighboring villages take the opportunity to exchange news.
For those visiting the region, the Dompierre-Becquincourt flea market can be an opportunity to discover this little-known sector of the Somme, rich in Great War memory with its British military cemeteries and memorials.
