The great Vimeu flea market in spring
The Saint-Maxent flea market is one of the major bargain hunting events of the Vimeu. Organized by the festivities committee, the event brings together about 130 exhibitors on a Saturday in June in this village in the southwest of the Somme. Friendly atmosphere, beautiful finds and warm welcome make the reputation of this spring flea market, a stone's throw from the Picardy coast and the Bay of Somme.
With its 130 exhibitors, the Saint-Maxent flea market is one of the most important bargain hunting events of the Vimeu, this locksmith and industrial region in the southwest of the Somme. Organized by the village festivities committee, the event is held on a Saturday in June, offering bargain hunters the advantage of a weekend day that leaves Sunday free for other activities. This original scheduling, coupled with the recognized welcome of local volunteers, contributes to the good attendance of the event year after year.
The 130 stands, mostly run by private individuals from the village and neighboring communities, offer a remarkable variety: dishware and earthenware, household linen, clothes for the whole family, old and new toys, books, comics, vinyl records, cassettes and CDs, furniture in original condition or to be restored, tools, various trinkets, advertising objects and sometimes some beautiful regional pieces. Attentive bargain hunters can find objects related to the artisanal past of the Vimeu, particularly hardware and locksmithing.
The Saint-Maxent festivities committee, like many village associations in the Somme, leads the event with dedication and know-how. Volunteers ensure the reception of exhibitors, space management, animation of the refreshment bar where morning coffee, midday sandwiches and afternoon refreshments are offered. This volunteer organization, essential to the life of small rural communities, gives the flea market its authenticity and warm atmosphere: neighbors meet, exchange news, share a coffee between two bargain huntings.
Saint-Maxent is a village of about 450 inhabitants located in the Vimeu, this southwestern part of the Somme department long specialized in the production of locks, taps and small hardware. The community is about fifteen kilometers south of Abbeville and near Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and the Picardy coast. Visitors can easily combine their morning of bargain hunting with an afternoon in the Bay of Somme, at Saint-Valery, Le Crotoy or on the beaches of Mers-les-Bains and Cayeux-sur-Mer.
