Viry-Châtillon, between Orly and the Seine

Viry-Châtillon is an Essonne (91) commune of around 31,000 inhabitants in the southern inner suburbs of Paris. Bordered to the west by the Seine and neighboured to the north by Orly airport, it holds a strategic position in the greater Paris area, served by RER D and several major roads linking Essonne, Val-de-Marne and Val-d'Oise.

1st May: a flea-market tradition in Essonne

May Day, the national public holiday, is one of the busiest days in the Île-de-France flea-market calendar. Every year, Viry-Châtillon's Boulevard Meder hosts the private-seller flea market organised by Penichost Organisation. Sellers come from Viry-Châtillon and surrounding communes to offer knick-knacks, clothes, toys, books and everyday items. Free entry, outdoors, and open to all.

The Seine and Viry-Châtillon's riverside heritage

One of Viry-Châtillon's lesser-known assets is its relationship with the Seine. The riverside offers pleasant walks and access to the water's edge. The bridge linking the town to Grigny on the opposite bank is an important crossing point. Historically a commercial river port, today the Seine banks attract cyclists and walkers.
