About Marché aux Puces Cransac

The Marché aux Puces de Cransac is a monthly event held on the first Sunday of each month, from April to November, on Place Jean Jaurès in this unique spa town in Europe. Organized by the association Les Orteils au Soleil, this flea market welcomes individuals and professional dealers in the town center of Cransac-les-Thermes, in the heart of the Decazeville basin in Aveyron. Held at the same time as the Sunday market, it allows bargain hunters to combine their finds with local Aveyron produce, in the friendly atmosphere of a spa town with a remarkable mining past.

A flea market in the heart of Cransac-les-Thermes

Every first Sunday of the month, from April to November, the Place Jean Jaurès in Cransac-les-Thermes comes alive with its Flea Market. Exhibitors set up from 7 a.m. in this central square, alongside the traditional Sunday market, creating a lively and friendly atmosphere that attracts residents from the Decazeville basin and spa-goers on thermal stays.

The stalls offer a range of items characteristic of flea markets in the south of France: antiques and second-hand goods, crockery, trinkets, books, vinyl records, vintage clothing, small furniture, tools, lighting, and various finds. The 4-linear meter pitch is available to exhibitors for a modest fee of 10 euros, ensuring an abundant and varied offering at each event.

Cransac-les-Thermes, a town of three lives

The history of Cransac can be read in three extraordinary chapters. At the beginning of the 19th century, the town was a renowned spa resort known as Cransac-les-Eaux, frequented by "water drinkers" who came to treat liver ailments thanks to its numerous mineral springs. Coal mining then transformed the town into Cransac-les-Mines, one of the richest coalfields in southern France, but drilling dried up the thermal springs.

After the mines closed in 1960, thermalism experienced a spectacular renaissance thanks to a unique geological phenomenon in Europe: the "Montagne qui Brûle" (Burning Mountain). Hot, sulfurous natural gases, resulting from the spontaneous underground combustion of oil shale, escape from the slopes of this hill at temperatures approaching 120°C. The Cransac thermal baths use these emanations to treat rheumatological conditions, making this resort the only one in Europe to use natural thermal gases for therapeutic purposes.

The Decazeville basin and its mining heritage

Cransac-les-Thermes is part of the Decazeville basin, a region marked by over a century and a half of mining and industrial activity. The neighboring town of Decazeville, founded in the 19th century around coal mining and steel production, houses the Museum of Industrial and Mining Heritage with its mine gallery reconstructions. This industrial past gives the entire basin a strong identity and a precious heritage of memory.

Cransac itself has the "Les Mémoires de Cransac" museum, which retraces the town's three lives—thermal, mining, and contemporary thermal—as well as a heritage trail through the town's streets and contemporary art installations, including the "Triangulaire de Cransac," which engage with the territory's industrial legacy.

A day of bargain hunting and discovery in Aveyron

The Marché aux Puces de Cransac offers an opportunity to combine bargain hunting with the discovery of a unique region. Visitors can extend their morning at the market with a visit to the thermal baths, a walk on the "Montagne qui Brûle" trail, or a stop at the "Les Mémoires de Cransac" museum. The thermal park, with its century-old trees, is a pleasant place for a stroll just a stone's throw from Place Jean Jaurès. The town is also a stop on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, adding a spiritual and historical dimension to this distinctive territory in the heart of Rouergue.
