La Roche-sur-Yon's big annual libraries book sale
Each year the La Roche-sur-Yon Agglomération and its public libraries network hold the Braderie du Livre, one of the finest cultural and solidarity events in the Vendée prefecture. 2026 date: Saturday 13 June. The giant sale offers thousands of works at symbolic prices (€0.50 to a few euros), drawn from regular library collection weeding.
The principle is virtuous: shelf-removed books (duplicates, old editions, little-borrowed titles) get a second life, and proceeds fund new acquisitions to enrich collections. It circulates reading, stocks private home libraries cheaply, and keeps books from destruction.
Thousands of visitors each year from La Roche-sur-Yon and all Vendée. Early birds hunt rare pearls (art books, rare editions, complete sets). Families stock holiday libraries. Collectors grab sometimes very sought-after old works.
Culturally active: Benjamin-Rabier media library, independent bookshops, children's book festival, literary events. The Braderie reflects this cultural openness and the libraries' commitment to reading for all.
Renovated Place Napoléon, Haras, city Museum, Oudairies park. Town-centre cafes and restaurants for breaks between book purchases.
