Riotord is a village of about 1,200 inhabitants, nestled in the Pilat mountains and the Pays de Montfaucon in Haute-Loire, on the borders of the Ardèche and Loire departments. Every May 8th, this quiet village is radically transformed to host one of the most popular fairs in the area: the Foire des Morilles.

The Morel, Spring Queen of Haute-Loire

The name of this fair is directly inspired by the morel mushroom (Morchella sp.), a spring delicacy prized by gourmets that grows in the undergrowth and meadows of Haute-Loire from March-April. Haute-Loire is a renowned mushroom-growing region, and the morel is its spring jewel. Organizing a fair in its honor on May 8th, during peak season, is a delicious nod to this gastronomic heritage. Local culinary specialties, especially those based on mushrooms, will be found at the stalls.

A Large-Scale Outdoor Fair

With around 100 exhibitors, the Foire des Morilles is a significant event for a village of this size. The event takes place both in the village streets and on the sports field, offering ample space for setting up stalls. A wide variety of goods are available: clothing and textiles, tools and hardware, jewelry and adornments, artisanal products, regional culinary specialties, vegetable plants, and flowering plants. The Car Boot Sale and Craft Market

The event is divided into two complementary areas. Outdoors, near the sports field, the car boot sale brings together individuals offering their second-hand items at various prices. In the village hall (multi-purpose room), a craft market brings together local artisans and creators who exhibit and sell their productions: pottery, textiles, wood creations, handmade jewelry, artisanal soaps, and other designer items. This dual format significantly enriches the overall offering of the fair.

Activities for Children and Families

The Foire des Morilles is resolutely family-oriented. Inflatable structures are set up for children to have fun while their parents browse or shop. Some editions have also featured themed exhibitions: old tractors, vintage agricultural equipment, classic vehicles, adding a further heritage and nostalgic dimension to the event.
