The Flea Market at the Château de Montréal

Every May, the Château de Montréal hosts its annual flea market, a must-attend event for lovers of antique hunting and curiosities in Southern Ardèche and neighboring departments. For 4 days, the medieval castle and its surroundings are transformed into an exceptional flea market and antique fair, offering a truly unique setting to find antique furniture, art objects, ceramics, books, prints, and curiosities of all kinds.

The event is organized by Hubert Fénestrier, a stonemason passionate about old stones who began the solitary and methodical restoration of this medieval and Renaissance castle, a listed Historic Monument, in 1998. This extraordinary project, carried out with determination and passion, has brought this 12th-16th century fortress back to life and made it a unique place for cultural events in Ardèche. The annual flea market is a natural part of this initiative to open up to the public and promote heritage.

Professional dealers and individuals mingle during these May days to offer a varied and curated selection: antique furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries, antique ceramics and porcelain, art objects, old prints and paintings, jewelry and silverware, old books and documents, tools and everyday objects from the past, antique textiles and lace. The selection is often of high quality, with the castle setting attracting exhibitors who are keen to present pieces in keeping with the atmosphere of the place.

Entry is free for flea market visitors, which encourages a large turnout from the local population and the many tourists visiting Ardèche in May. The 4-day format allows visitors to take their time browsing, discovering, negotiating, and returning to catch new arrivals.

The Château de Montréal, a medieval gem of Southern Ardèche

The Château de Montréal is one of the most unique monuments in Ardèche. Located in the village of Montréal (delegated commune of Val-de-Ligne, postal code 07110), at 75 rue du Château, this medieval and Renaissance castle, a listed Historic Monument, is an exceptional testament to the military and seigneurial architecture of medieval Vivarais. Founded in the 12th-13th centuries and remodeled in the 15th-16th centuries, it has survived the centuries before falling into ruin, eventually being taken over by Hubert Fénestrier from 1998 onwards.

The restoration undertaken by Hubert Fénestrier is a project of remarkable scale and uniqueness: alone, with his stonemason tools and an inexhaustible passion for old stones, he has brought this castle back to life stone by stone, using traditional techniques and period materials. This extraordinary undertaking has attracted the attention of regional and national media, and the castle is now open to the public for visits, educational workshops (medieval calligraphy, fencing and chivalry, heraldry study), and cultural events.

The castle is located in the Ligne valley, a modest river that has nevertheless contributed to the agricultural and artisanal prosperity of the area over the centuries. Montréal is part of the new commune of Val-de-Ligne, which brings together several villages in this part of Southern Ardèche, between Largentière and Joyeuse. The area is rich in medieval heritage and Ardèche hill landscapes covered with vines, olive trees, and chestnut trees.

Hubert Fénestrier: One Man, One Castle

Hubert Fénestrier is an endearing and admired figure in Southern Ardèche. A stonemason by trade, passionate about medieval architecture and ancestral construction techniques, he acquired the Château de Montréal in a state of advanced ruin and embarked on its restoration with admirable determination. Since 1998, he has been carrying out this titanic project with the care, patience, and skill of an artisan in love with his heritage.

His work is not limited to the physical restoration of the building: Hubert Fénestrier has made the castle a living place, open to all, offering guided tours, educational activities for schoolchildren and the general public, room rentals for events, and of course, the annual May flea market. His approach embodies a certain vision of living heritage, where restoration and enhancement go hand in hand with public reception and knowledge sharing.

Joyeuse, the capital of the Four Valleys region, is worth a visit for its market and Provençal atmosphere. The Beaume valley, narrow and wild, invites hiking. The Gorges de l'Ardèche are about thirty kilometers away. The village of Balazuc, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, is within driving distance for heritage enthusiasts.
