Vouvant Medieval Festival

A medieval festival in Mélusine's town

Vouvant is a Most Beautiful Village of France with exceptional medieval heritage: Mélusine tower (12th-c. keep, one of western France's finest), ramparts, fortified gate, Romanesque church. Ideal setting for a medieval festival reviving the Middle Ages each summer. 2025: 10 August. 2026: expected Sat 8 / Sun 9 August (TBC).

Though called a 'festival', it includes a major market: medieval market with craftsmen, brocante of old and medieval items, local-produce sales. For brocante lovers, a unique chance to hunt in an extraordinary atmosphere, with costumed sellers and rarely-encountered thematic coherence.

Mélusine legend

The festival naturally highlights Mélusine, iconic Poitou fairy who, per myth, built the village tower and regional castles (Lusignan, Tiffauges, Parthenay). Themed activities, storytellers, sometimes a central show about her — tribute to Vouvant's tutelary figure.

Visitor tips

Come early for full activity access. Local-produce catering and medieval dishes (spit-roasted pork, soups, flatbreads, mead). Camera essential. Comfy shoes (paved, uneven). Can come in costume to blend in (optional). Entry sometimes paid to fund shows.

Come early — high attendance. Parking outside village, centre pedestrianised during festival. Short walk to centre.
