May Day bargain hunting on the shopping centre car park
May 1st, traditionally a public holiday for lily-of-the-valley and marches, has also become a must-date for large Var flea markets. The Carrefour Salamandrier car park in Draguignan, vast and easy to reach, is a perfect setting for this kind of popular gathering.
The 1 May 2026 edition should once again draw a large crowd from across the Dracénie, the Pays de Fayence and neighbouring towns such as Les Arcs, Lorgues or Le Muy.
The setting may seem prosaic, but shopping-centre car parks offer big advantages: easy parking, flat spacious ground, quick access and the chance to combine hunting with errands. The atmosphere is very popular, with a real mix of exhibitors.
A Var sub-prefecture, Draguignan is the historic capital of the Dracénie, a crossroads between Provence Verte and the Côte d'Azur hinterland. Once the department prefecture until 1974, it has a lively historic centre and rich heritage (clock tower, Provençal traditions museum).
Come early on 1 May as the best bargains go first. Bring small change, shopping bags and maybe a trolley. Bring hat and water if sunny.
