Grand car boot sale of the Diwan bilingual Breton school, Place Émile Zola, Nantes
Every June, the Diwan school in Nantes invites exhibitors and visitors to its grand car boot sale on Place Émile Zola, in the Zola district of the city. Diwan, an associative movement founded in 1977, carries a unique educational project: immersion education in the Breton language, from kindergarten to high school. This annual event is both a festive gathering and an act of support for this unique pedagogy.
Place Émile Zola, in the heart of the eponymous district in the south of Nantes, offers an ideal setting to host up to 150 exhibitors. Individuals, families, and amateur second-hand dealers offer a wide selection of second-hand items: clothing for children and adults, toys, books—sometimes in Breton—crockery, decorations, childcare equipment, and many other items.
Exhibitors can register in advance for a preferential rate of €13 per space, or pay €15 directly on-site on the day of the event. This two-tiered pricing encourages early registration, allowing organizers to best plan the allocation of spaces on the square.
Diwan (“seed” or “bud” in Breton) was born from the desire of Breton families to pass on their language and culture to new generations. The Diwan network now has schools, middle schools, and high schools throughout Brittany and Loire-Atlantique. The Nantes school, established in the city for several decades, welcomes children whose families want a French-Breton bilingual education based on immersion pedagogy.
The proceeds from this car boot sale directly contribute to the financing of the school's activities: educational trips, purchase of equipment, organization of cultural events related to the Breton language. By participating in this car boot sale, exhibitors and visitors concretely support an educational project that preserves the linguistic and cultural richness of Brittany in the heart of the Nantes metropolis.

On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Place Émile Zola hosts the annual Diwan school flea market in Nantes for its new edition. From 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, approximately 150 private exhibitors will set up their stalls at the foot of Saint-Pasquier church, in the Dervallières-Zola district, southwest of Nantes.
This is a flea market strictly reserved for private individuals — no professional dealers. Bargain hunters will find a classic range of second-hand items: adult and children's clothing, toys, books, crockery, childcare items, small decorative items. The event is friendly and family-oriented, on a neighborhood scale.
On site, a refreshment stand and a food point run by volunteers from the EVIT Diwan association allow visitors to spend the day without leaving the square. Profits are donated to the Diwan school in Nantes, a Breton-French bilingual associative school.
The pitch is charged at 13€ per linear meter for pre-registration (via HelloAsso) or 15€ on site on the day. Exhibitors are welcomed from 6:30 AM; vehicles can only circulate on the square before 8:15 AM and after 5:30 PM. Placement is on a first-come, first-served basis, with no choice possible.
