The summer rendezvous of a small Santerre village
The Chilly vide-grenier takes place every year on rue de Roye, one of the main streets of the village, which becomes for a day an open-air bargain-hunting route. Exhibitors, almost exclusively private sellers from the village and surrounding area, set up their tables on pavements or in their courtyards, creating a winding circuit that invites strolling.
Chilly is a small commune of around 200 inhabitants located in the Santerre, an agricultural region of south-eastern Somme renowned for its vast cereal plains. Like many villages in the Santerre, Chilly was largely rebuilt in the 1920s following World War I damage.
As in most Somme village vide-greniers, you will find at Chilly the classic repertoire of amateur bargain hunting: crockery, household linen, clothes, toys, books, trinkets, small furniture, tools, old games, vinyl records, postcards. Prices are modest.
The Chilly vide-grenier is part of the rich calendar of réderies and vide-greniers that enliven the Santerre and east of the Somme between April and October. Every Sunday or almost, a neighbouring commune organises its own event.
A day of bargain hunting in Chilly can be an opportunity to discover the Santerre, an often-overlooked but historically rich region. The Australian memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, the Remembrance circuit, the military cemeteries compose a unique landscape.
