Every spring, La Tour-du-Crieu hosts its annual car boot sale in the village center. This friendly event brings together the inhabitants of the commune and surrounding villages for a day of treasure hunting in a typical rural setting of Bas-Ariège. La Tour-du-Crieu, a commune on the outskirts of Pamiers, benefits from an active network of associations that animate the local calendar and organize several events throughout the year.
La Tour-du-Crieu is a commune in Ariège (09100) located a few kilometers from Pamiers, the district capital and the second largest town in the department. The communal territory extends over the hills of Bas-Ariège, between the alluvial plain of the Ariège river and the first foothills of the Pyrenean piedmont. The commune owes its name to an old medieval watchtower that dominated the territory of the Crieu, a stream flowing into the Ariège. The surrounding countryside, dotted with fields, orchards, and woods, offers a bucolic and peaceful setting.
The spring car boot sale of La Tour-du-Crieu is one of the highlights of local associative life. The sellers, mostly individuals from the commune and neighboring villages, offer all sorts of items from their attics and sheds: country furniture, tableware and kitchen utensils, agricultural and gardening tools, books, clothes, toys, and trinkets. The spirit of sharing and solidarity that characterizes these rural events gives the car boot sale a charm that large urban flea markets do not always have.
La Tour-du-Crieu is part of the Pamiers basin, an agricultural and commercial crossroads of Ariège. The fertile and irrigated alluvial plain of the Ariège produces cereals, vegetables, and fruits that have made Bas-Ariège famous. Pamiers, a few kilometers away, offers its shops, services, and cultural facilities to the inhabitants of the commune. The Saint-Antonin Cathedral of Pamiers, the Jardins du Mail, and the Château de l'Évêché are all sites to discover during a stay in the region.
The car boot sale is held in the center of La Tour-du-Crieu, accessible from Pamiers via the D119. Entry is free for visitors. Seller registration is done through the town hall or local organizing associations. Tables and racks are generally not provided, and sellers are invited to bring their own setup equipment.
