May 8th bargain hunters' rendezvous in the village square
Every May 8th, the Comité des fêtes of Campsas turns the village square into a large bargain hunter's playground. Locals and regulars unpack their treasures at dawn in this small Tarn-et-Garonne village near Montauban. On-site catering all day, family atmosphere and good humour guaranteed for this springtime tradition that opens the flea market season in Quercy.
The Campsas flea market has become one of the unmissable early-season events in Tarn-et-Garonne. Held every year on May 8th (Victory Day public holiday) by the dynamic local Comité des fêtes, it attracts seasoned bargain hunters and families looking for a relaxed morning out on the village square.
Campsas, a small village in the Tarn valley halfway between Montauban and Toulouse, takes on the look of a large open-air market for the day. Exhibitors, mostly local residents and people from neighbouring villages, set up from 6:30 AM to prepare their stalls before the first visitors arrive.
Children's and adult clothing, toys, books, crockery, decorative objects, small furniture, tools, vinyl records, family knick-knacks: variety is on the menu. A few amateur dealers also offer small vintage items, old postcards and second-hand comic books. For patient hunters, this type of rural flea market remains one of the best places to find the unexpected piece at a low price.
The mood is resolutely friendly: visitors stroll between the stalls, chat with sellers and stop at the food stand run by the Comité des fêtes. Sandwiches, grilled meats, fries and cold drinks are served throughout the day, turning the flea market into a true village celebration where people happily extend their visit into the early afternoon.
Arrive early: the best pieces leave within the first hour. Bring small change, a sturdy bag and don't hesitate to bargain in good spirit. As May 8th is a public holiday, attendance can be high by late morning: those who prefer quieter conditions should come at first light.
