Annual September flea market and car boot sale in Bernay, a town of art and history in the Eure.
Every early September, the town of Bernay organizes its annual flea market and car boot sale. This late-summer gathering brings together individuals and dealers in the town's streets and squares for a day of treasure hunting before autumn arrives. Set against the historic backdrop of Bernay—its Norman half-timbered houses, its Romanesque abbey church, and its fine arts museum housed in the former abbatial palace—the flea market takes on a particularly pleasant atmosphere.
The September flea market is part of a particularly busy schedule in Bernay. The town hosts the Antiques Fair in April in its abbey church, the Ascension Day Street Sale in May, and this September flea market, not to mention other occasional events. Bernay thus asserts its role as a capital of flea markets and good deals in the Eure department.
Founded in the 6th century and fortified in the Middle Ages, Bernay has preserved an exceptionally rich architectural heritage. Its 11th-century abbey church, one of the first great Romanesque structures in Normandy, its Rue Gaston Folloppe lined with 15th and 16th-century half-timbered houses, and its museum housed in the former baroque abbatial palace make it a recognized town of art and history. The Charentonne river, which flows through the town, adds a touch of Norman picturesque charm.
The 2026 edition of the Bernay flea market and car boot sale is scheduled for Sunday, September 6, 2026. Amidst the last warmth of summer and the first signs of Norman autumn, it's a great opportunity to hunt for treasures in a historic town.
