Brocante Place Maucourt — Vitry-le-François (51300), May 8th
Every May 8th, the day commemorating the Victory in 1945, Place Maucourt in Vitry-le-François (51300) transforms into a large open-air flea market. This annual event, held on this public holiday which encourages public participation, is one of the popular events in the sub-prefecture of the Marne.
Place Maucourt is the heart of Vitry-le-François. This vast square with classical architecture, surrounded by regular buildings dating from the city's reconstruction in the 18th century, offers a remarkable setting for the flea market. The geometric rigor of the square and the harmony of its facades create an urban decor of great beauty that pleasantly contrasts with the colorful and eclectic abundance of the stalls that set up for the day.
Vitry-le-François is a unique historical city. Founded in 1545 by King François I after the destruction of old Vitry by Charles V, it was designed from the outset as a new town, built according to a regular grid plan inspired by Renaissance ideals. This urban plan, which has withstood time and the destructions of World War II (the city was largely rebuilt after 1945), gives Vitry a particular, ordered, and harmonious physiognomy.
The city is distinguished by its Notre-Dame church, an imposing 18th-century building rebuilt after the war, and by its Marne-Rhine canal, which crosses the municipal territory and gives it a particular industrial and landscape dimension. The Der-Chantecoq lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, is accessible in a few minutes by car.
The choice of May 8th for the Place Maucourt flea market is particularly judicious. This national holiday, commemorating the capitulation of Nazi Germany and the Allied Victory in 1945, is traditionally associated with official ceremonies but also with family outings and leisure activities. The Place Maucourt flea market is part of this tradition of a festive day, offering Vitry residents and passing visitors a cultural and commercial alternative to the usual Sunday or holiday activities.
Holding the flea market on May 8th also links the duty of remembrance — ceremonies at the war memorial often take place in the morning — with the convivial celebration of regained freedom, which can then take the form of a stroll among the flea market stalls in the heart of the city.
