In the heart of summer, the Place du Marché in Mareuil-en-Périgord hosts a flea market that attracts treasure hunters and strollers to this medieval village in Périgord Vert. The Château de Mareuil, one of the four baronies of Périgord, overlooks the square and offers an exceptional setting for this summer event.
Mareuil-en-Périgord is a particularly active municipality when it comes to flea markets and car boot sales. Throughout the high season, several events follow one another on the Place du Marché: a spring flea market in April, a car boot sale in June and July, hikes and pétanque associated with the car boot sale in August, and an autumn flea market in September. This density of events reflects the dynamic community spirit of this town of 3,000 inhabitants in the north of Dordogne.
The Place du Marché in Mareuil is a vast central square lined with old houses and shops, at the foot of the castle. Traditionally a place for fairs and markets, this square continues a centuries-old commercial vocation by hosting flea market stalls. Visitors can find country furniture, old tableware, trinkets, books, tools, clothing, and decorative objects, in an authentic village atmosphere.
Mareuil-en-Périgord is the gateway to Périgord Vert, a green and hilly region in the north of Dordogne. The town, watered by the Belle river, an affluent of the Dronne, offers bucolic landscapes ideal for walks after treasure hunting.
