Seaside bargain hunting in the Belle Époque resort
The Mers-les-Bains flea market and vide-greniers in June is one of the bargain hunters' events on the Picardy coast. Set up in this seaside resort famous for its classified Belle Époque villas, the event attracts private exhibitors, professionals and lovers of beautiful finds in a unique setting, a stone's throw from the beach and its white cliffs. A summer day of bargain hunting with sea air.
Mers-les-Bains is one of the three twin resorts on the Picardy coast, along with Le Tréport and Eu, nestled at the meeting point between Somme and Seine-Maritime. The town is world famous for the exceptional ensemble of its Belle Époque villas, classified as a protected area, which form a colorful and lacy seafront unique in France. It is in this unique setting that one of the most pleasant flea markets of the Somme takes place every June, attracting bargain hunters from all over Normandy and Picardy.
The charm of the Mers-les-Bains flea market obviously lies in its setting. The exhibitors set up in the streets near the seafront, under the gaze of the villas with polychrome facades, bow-windows and painted wooden balconies typical of the late 19th century. Between two stands, bargain hunters can push to the esplanade and admire the spectacular white chalk cliffs that close the bay. This combination of bargain hunting, heritage and sea panorama makes the event a special one in the Picardy flea market calendar.
The flea market brings together a balanced mix of private individuals and professionals. The stands offer a wide range of goods: dishware and earthenware, maritime objects and seaside souvenirs, vintage furniture, old linen, books, postcards of the resort, old papers, old toys, records, trinkets and collectibles. The proximity of the sea always inspires some exhibitors to feature a selection of nautical-themed objects particularly appreciated by visitors.
Beyond the flea market, Mers-les-Bains is worth lingering for a day. The walk on the Charcot esplanade, the discovery of the seaside district and its 600 protected villas, the climb to the Bois de Cise for the view of Le Tréport and Mers, the café terraces facing the sea: all pleasant complements to a morning of bargain hunting. A few kilometers away, the Bay of Somme, Ault and its cliffs, or Le Tréport and its funicular invite visitors to extend the discovery of this remarkable coastline.
