Annual spring flea market in the village of Mériot, in the Bassée plain (Aube)
The Brocante du Mérot is held every year in March in Mériot (Aube, 10400), a village in the Bassée plain on the banks of the Seine. This spring event brings together private sellers and bargain hunters in a typical village atmosphere of the Aube countryside. Furniture, tableware, clothing, trinkets, and various objects are offered at affordable prices. Free entry for visitors.
Every March, the village of Mériot (Aube, 10400) hosts its annual flea market. This village in the Bassée plain, located in the southwestern corner of the Aube department, not far from the Seine and the Marne department, is a quiet rural town that comes alive for this spring event. The flea market is set up in the village square and streets, bringing together local sellers and visitors from neighboring towns.
Mériot is located in the Bassée plain, a vast area of cereal crops bordered by the Seine in its upper reaches. This territory, shared between Aube, Marne, and Seine-et-Marne, is one of the major agricultural areas of the Paris Basin. The villages along it have retained an authentic rural character, with their farms, barns, and bourgeois houses bearing witness to past agricultural prosperity. In this context, flea markets and car boot sales are important moments of social life, allowing residents to meet and visitors to discover this discreet but charming region.
The Brocante du Mérot is mainly supplied by private sellers from the town and surrounding villages. It reflects the contents of the homes and farms of the Bassée: country furniture (sideboards, tables, peasant chairs), old tableware (faience, porcelain, stoneware), cookware (copper pots, cast iron pans), agricultural and artisanal tools, textiles (embroidered tablecloths, lace curtains), books, postcards, old toys, and clothing from all generations. Prices are generally very affordable, as individuals are primarily looking to get rid of items cluttering their outbuildings.
In March, the Bassée plain offers an austere but striking panorama: the still brown fields of winter meet the first tender greens of sprouting cereals. The sky, often vast and bright, gives this plain landscape a special quality. The Brocante du Mérot fits naturally into this landscape, bringing color and animation to a village that, the rest of the year, lives at the quiet pace of agriculture and the seasons. The relative mildness of March makes it a pleasant time for outdoor bargain hunting.
Mériot is about fifteen kilometers from Nogent-sur-Seine, a sub-prefecture of the Aube with interesting medieval heritage. The collegiate church of Notre-Dame de Nogent is a fine example of Champagne Gothic architecture. The banks of the Seine offer beautiful walks. Further north, the town of Provins (Seine-et-Marne), a UNESCO World Heritage site, is accessible in less than an hour. A visit to the Brocante du Mérot can therefore be part of a broader discovery program of this key region between Champagne and Île-de-France.
The Brocante du Mérot is held every year in March in the square and streets of the village of Mériot (10400). Free entry. Refreshments and food available on site. Access from Nogent-sur-Seine (approx. 15 km) or Troyes (approx. 45 km).
