Villey-le-Sec, a town in the Toulois region famous for its Séré de Rivières fortified complex, a listed historic monument, hosts a major flea market in its picturesque streets every May 1st. Organized by the Foyer Rural Les Trabecs, this event brings together between 100 and 200 private exhibitors and attracts hundreds of visitors eager to hunt for treasures in a remarkable heritage setting.
The village streets transform into a vast open-air flea market. Exhibitors offer antique tableware, furniture, clothing, toys, books, tools, and collectibles along the lanes lined with traditional Lorraine houses. The treasure hunting route, stretching through several village streets, offers a unique strolling experience against the backdrop of the imposing 19th-century fortifications.
Villey-le-Sec occupies a strategic position on the heights overlooking the Moselle River, between Toul and Marbache. Its fortified complex, built between 1874 and 1879 as part of the Séré de Rivières system, is one of the few complete examples of a fortified village in France. This exceptional military heritage, with its batteries, casemates, and underground network, is the subject of guided tours organized by a local association.
The popularity of this flea market is such that exhibitor spots regularly fill up well before the event. The price is 15 euros for 5 meters, with mandatory registration. Refreshments and light meals are available from the Foyer Rural's refreshment stand. The event runs from 8 am to 6 pm, with exhibitors setting up from 6 am.
