A 1st May tradition

1st May: symbolic French date (Labour Day, bank holiday), traditionally when many communes run festive events. In Triaize, south-Vendée at Marais Poitevin edge, a 1st May brocante tradition is established. 2026: Friday 1 May.

Distinct from the July Fête de la Bouse flea. Different tone: less festive, more pure bargain-hunting, more semi-pro sellers offering old furniture, trinkets, collectibles. Here for real brocante finds.

Triaize, ideal setting

1,000-inhabitant village, Marais Poitevin edge, between Luçon and La Tranche-sur-Mer. Preserved rural charm: low white-limed houses, small church, village squares.

Brocante spirit

Unlike private-seller fleas, a brocante is more 'professional': sellers know their pieces, have them appraised, price them to reflect value. Still negotiable but margins lower. In return, better quality, rarer, better-preserved pieces.

Chiner tips

Come very early: pro brocanteurs scan aisles from 6am. Cash (much preferred over cards), camera for advice, tape for furniture dimensions. Smartphone search tools help verify ratings. Negotiate with respect.

Triaize brocanteurs

Many are regional-circuit regulars: Bressuire, Nantes, Cholet, La Roche-sur-Yon year-round. Meeting them at Triaize means less-frequented setting, softer prices than big events.

Association: refreshments and snacks. 1st May = lily-of-the-valley day. Some editions add a lily sale for charity.
