Every May 1st, Place Saint-Macé in Ferrières-en-Gâtinais transforms into a flea market to celebrate Labor Day in the style of treasure hunters. In the medieval setting of the Gâtinais town, exhibitors and visitors gather for this outdoor public holiday. A well-established tradition in Ferrières' festive calendar, accessible to all and free for the public.
May 1st is, throughout France, Labor Day and Lily of the Valley Day. In Ferrières-en-Gâtinais, it is also a day for treasure hunters: each year, Place Saint-Macé hosts an open-air flea market that turns this public holiday into a day of strolling, discoveries, and encounters. In the exceptional setting of this medieval town in the Loiret, this spring event has built a loyal following among flea market enthusiasts in the region.
Place Saint-Macé is the historic heart of Ferrières-en-Gâtinais. Dominated by the imposing facade of the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul abbey church, it is surrounded by half-timbered houses and medieval buildings that give the whole area a unique atmosphere. It is in this magnificent setting that exhibitors set up their stalls for the May 1st flea market, creating a striking contrast between the ancient built heritage and the modernity of second-hand items.
The May 1st flea market is open to all, without specific selection or sorting of exhibitors. Individuals and professionals mingle in the square to offer their items: furniture and decoration, tableware and table arts, clothing, books and collectibles, tools and garden equipment. Admission is free for the public, who can take advantage of the public holiday for a cultural and fun outing in one of the most beautiful towns in the Gâtinais.
The town of Ferrières-en-Gâtinais is intimately linked to its Benedictine abbey, founded in the 7th century and whose surviving buildings bear witness to the site's importance in the Middle Ages. The abbey church, with its Romanesque chapels and remarkable contemporary stained glass windows (including those by Max Ingrand), is classified as a historic monument. The May 1st visit to Ferrières is therefore also an opportunity for an extraordinary heritage walk.
Ferrières-en-Gâtinais is accessible by train from Paris-Bercy and Montargis (Paris-Nevers line, Ferrières-Fontenay stop). By car, the town is served by the RD 160 from Montargis. Parking is available in the car parks on the outskirts of the historic center.
