Bargain hunting in the Provençal Venice
The Port-Grimaud brocante unfolds across three emblematic squares of the lakeside town : place des Artisans, place du Marché and place de l'Église. Designed by architect François Spoerry, Port-Grimaud is one of the most singular French urban creations of the 20th century : a town on water, inspired by Venice, with canals, colourful fisher houses and inimitable Mediterranean feel. The brocante takes a unique dimension here, between chinage and a stroll in this extraordinary décor.
Port-Grimaud, the lakeside quarter of Grimaud created from scratch in the 1960s by architect François Spoerry, is one of the Saint-Tropez gulf's most spectacular sites. Inspired by Mediterranean fishing villages and Venice, the town spreads across nearly 90 hectares of canals, pastel façades, private docks, planted squares and constant water and Maures views.
The device is cleverly planned : spreading over three squares keeps any one space uncrowded and offers a natural stroll between them, along canals and pedestrian alleys. Each square has its own mood : Market with its shops and cafés, Church with its chapel and quiet, Artisans with its workshops.
The premium tourist dimension shows in exhibitor profiles : gulf and Haut-Var professional dealers with polished pieces – Provençal antique furniture, character tableware, Vallauris or Biot ceramics, Mediterranean glassware, marine and nautical objects, decorative items, lighting, old gulf postcards. Prices match the setting's quality but bargains stay possible.
A brocante visit is necessarily a Port-Grimaud visit : impossible to hunt without discovering canals, bridges, sea views. Water coaches offer commented boat tours. Pedestrian access from outer parkings. Partial listing preserves the atmosphere.
Early parking (outer obligatory). Allow time and comfortable shoes. Consider a boat tour. Combine with hilltop Grimaud a few kilometres away.
