Spring flea market and car boot sale at the covered market of Rieupeyroux, a bastide in the Ségala region
The Brocante and Vide-Grenier of Rieupeyroux is a spring treasure hunt event organized at the Foirail of this former sanctuary town in the Haut-Ségala, between Villefranche-de-Rouergue and Rodez. Up to a hundred exhibitors – individuals and professionals – take over the covered market and its surroundings to offer treasure hunters a wide range of antique objects, furniture, tableware, clothing, toys, and curiosities of all kinds. The setting is particularly pleasant: the covered hall allows for sheltered hunting in case of bad weather, while a refreshment stand and hot drinks welcome early visitors from 7 am. This flea market/car boot sale, distinct from the vintage vehicle show organized in April by Rétro Passion Ségala, is part of the tradition of large treasure hunting events that animate the Ségala aveyronnais throughout the year. Free entry for visitors.
The Foirail of Rieupeyroux hosts an annual spring flea market and car boot sale that attracts treasure hunters, families, and curious visitors from all over the Haut-Ségala aveyronnais. Up to a hundred exhibitors set up their stalls in the market grounds and under the covered hall, offering a wide selection of antique objects, furniture, tableware, books, clothing, toys, and trinkets. Exhibitor setup begins at 6:30 am, and sales open at 7 am, for a morning of treasure hunting that continues until early afternoon. Entry is free for visitors, and the atmosphere is decidedly friendly: coffee, hot chocolate, and tea are available from dawn to warm up the early risers.
Rieupeyroux, whose name means "stony river" (rivo petroso), is one of the oldest sanctuary towns in Rouergue, founded around 1030 when Escaffre, the eldest son of the seigneurial Peyrolles family, donated his allodial lands to the abbey of Saint-Martial de Limoges to establish a Benedictine monastery and church. This sanctuary, born from the Peace of God movement, offered refuge and protection to peasants and artisans who received building plots (ayral) and land to cultivate (casal). Over the centuries, the town adopted the regular plan characteristic of bastides, organized around two main axes – the Rue Droite and the Rue Naulta – and a central market square. In 1356, a fortified enclosure was built to protect the town from the ravages of the Hundred Years' War.
A heritage gem of Rieupeyroux, the Saint-Martial Church has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1923. Built in the Romanesque period and then extensively rebuilt in the 13th century, it was fortified during the Hundred Years' War: machicolations resting on arches between buttresses, defensive passages, and arrowslits bear witness to its transformation into a true spiritual fortress. Its almost octagonal plan intrigues visitors, as does the giant scapula preserved in the sacristy, an enigmatic relic that fuels local legends, particularly that of Gargantua. From the highest point of the commune, at 804 meters above sea level, the chapel of Modulance offers a striking panorama of the Haut-Ségala plateaus and the valleys of the Viaur and Aveyron.
The Foirail of Rieupeyroux, traditionally dedicated to the agricultural fairs of Ségala – a region renowned for its veal from Aveyron and Ségala (Label Rouge, IGP) – provides a privileged setting for the flea market and car boot sale. Its covered hall protects exhibitors and visitors in case of rain, while the outdoor spaces allow stalls to spread out widely. Access is easy, with free parking nearby and the possibility to unload in front of your spot before parking. 5m x 3m pitches are available for 10 euros, payable on arrival, without prior reservation.
The Rieupeyroux flea market and car boot sale offer the richness and diversity characteristic of large rural treasure hunting events in Aveyron. Stalls from individuals stand alongside those of seasoned treasure hunters:
The morning atmosphere of the market, between the first light of day and the aroma of hot coffee, creates a special moment of discovery and conviviality where locals from Ségala, treasure hunters from neighboring valleys, and visitors passing through Aveyron mingle.
Spring is an ideal season to discover the Ségala aveyronnais, this territory of schist and granite with vast plateaus interspersed with deep valleys. The meadows turn green, the broom begins to bloom, and the winding roads connecting the villages of Haut-Ségala offer remarkable panoramas. Visitors can extend their morning of treasure hunting by exploring the heritage of Rieupeyroux – medieval alleys, the Place du Gitat with its arcades, the Fountain of Griffoul, half-timbered houses – or venture towards the nearby castles of Belcastel and Bournazel, the gorges of the Aveyron, or the bastide of Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, one of the most beautiful in France.
The Brocante and Vide-Grenier of Rieupeyroux returns on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at the Foirail of this bastide in Ségala. Up to 100 exhibitors, free entry, covered hall in case of rain, refreshment stand from 7 am. Pitches at €10 (5m x 3m), payable on arrival.
