Traditional May 1st car boot sale organised by the Association Sportive de Haguenau in the streets of the town
The ASH Haguenau Car Boot Sale is a May 1st institution in northern Alsace. Organised for more than ten years by the Association Sportive de Haguenau (handball and multidisciplinary club), it takes over the streets of the town each year to offer bargain hunters a major popular and festive brocante. Hundreds of private exhibitors and a few professionals offer a vast range of items at low prices: adult and children's clothing, toys, books, trinkets, crockery, small furniture, decorative items, vinyls, CDs, DVDs, video games, childcare items and a thousand other treasures. In the characteristic atmosphere of the Alsatian May 1st, the profits of the event are donated to finance the sports activities and projects of the club.
The ASH Car Boot Sale (Association Sportive de Haguenau) has become over the editions one of the emblematic events of May 1st in Haguenau, arrondissement capital and sub-prefecture of the Bas-Rhin. For more than ten years, volunteers, players, coaches and parents of the club have mobilised their forces to organise this major spring event which has become an integral part of the festive calendar of the town. Set up in the streets of Haguenau, the car boot sale extends over several arteries and welcomes hundreds of private exhibitors from the town and surrounding communes. The atmosphere is popular, festive and family-friendly, characteristic of these major urban May 1st brocantes which enliven Alsace and the rest of France.
Bargain hunters find on the stalls an extraordinary mix of items: adult and children's clothing (new or lightly worn), shoes, fashion accessories, toys for all ages (soft toys, board games, figurines, dolls, miniature vehicles, Lego, Playmobil, educational games), books (novels, comics, children's books, encyclopaedias), CDs, DVDs, vinyls, video games and consoles, decorative trinkets, crockery, glassware, small furniture, childcare items (strollers, bouncers, car seats, early learning toys), sports equipment, bicycles, scooters, DIY and gardening tools. Diversity is guaranteed and prices low, all in a sporting and convivial atmosphere thanks to the mobilisation of club volunteers.
Haguenau, with its nearly 35,000 inhabitants, is the fourth town in Alsace and the largest in the Bas-Rhin after Strasbourg. Set at the edge of the Haguenau forest (one of the largest forests in France), it presents a rich historical heritage with its Saint-Georges and Saint-Nicolas churches, its museums (Musée du Bagage, Musée Historique, Musée Alsacien), its theatre and its commercial town centre. The Association Sportive de Haguenau (ASH) is one of the leading clubs in the town, particularly known for its handball section which plays in national championships. Its associative and community commitment, illustrated by the organisation of this May 1st car boot sale, testifies to the vitality of the Haguenau sporting and associative fabric. The event brings together each year residents, bargain hunters and families in a day marked by conviviality, bargain hunting and support for local sport.
