The Graviers-Vilmorin neighbourhood, living memory of Massy

The Graviers-Vilmorin neighbourhood is one of Massy's oldest and most historically significant districts. Its name evokes two intertwined realities: the 'Graviers' (gravels), referring to the sandy, stony soils typical of this part of the Saclay plateau, and the Vilmorin house, one of France's most famous seed companies and nurseries, whose estate once extended across much of present-day Massy.

The Vilmorin company, founded in the 18th century, played a considerable role in the development of French horticulture and agriculture. Today, while the Vilmorin estate has largely disappeared under post-war urbanisation, the memory of this institution lives on in the neighbourhood that bears its name.

The Halle des Graviers, on Rue Jean Jaurès, is the neighbourhood's central facility, hosting cultural, associative and commercial events throughout the year. Each early June it becomes the stage for the Graviers Festival and its car boot sale, organised by the Massy Graviers Association (AMG).
