The Vide-Grenier de Tarascon: Treasure hunting at the foot of King René's castle

Each year, May 1st offers the inhabitants of Tarascon and the surrounding towns the opportunity to gather for a popular car boot sale in the heart of this historic Provençal city. Individuals and families take over the streets and squares of the city to offer second-hand items, clothing, tableware, toys, books, and trinkets at low prices. This public holiday event attracts local treasure hunters and passing visitors in a relaxed and festive atmosphere.

Tarascon, sentinel of the Rhône

Located on the left bank of the Rhône, opposite Beaucaire in the Gard region, Tarascon occupies a strategic position that has shaped its destiny since antiquity. The city developed at the crossroads of land and river routes connecting Provence to Languedoc, controlling the political border of the Rhône until the annexation of Provence to France in 1481. This exceptional geographical location, between the Alpilles to the south and the Rhone plain, gives Tarascon a character that is both Provençal and Rhodanien, reflected in the atmosphere of its markets and flea markets.

Tarascon Castle, a jewel of medieval architecture

Dominating the Rhône with its imposing silhouette, Tarascon Castle is one of the most beautiful fortified castles in France. Built between 1400 and 1449 by the Dukes of Anjou, Counts of Provence — Louis II, Louis III, and the famous King René — it elegantly combines Gothic and Renaissance styles. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1840, it is among the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. King René organized prestigious festivals there and made it a privileged meeting place for the Provençal court. Since 2009, it has housed the René d'Anjou Arts Centre, dedicated to contemporary creation.

The legend of the Tarasque

Tarascon owes its name to the Tarasque, a legendary creature that was half dragon, half bull, half fish, which, according to tradition, terrorized the inhabitants of the Rhône by devouring boat passengers. According to The Golden Legend by Jacques de Voragine (around 1260), Saint Martha, who arrived from Palestine at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, tamed the monster by sprinkling it with holy water and presenting it with the cross. The village of Nerluc, renamed Tarascon, was thus freed. The Festival of the Tarasque has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2005, and the relics of Saint Martha are still venerated in the collegiate church of the same name.

What to find at the car boot sale

The stalls at the Tarascon car boot sale offer the typical variety of Provençal second-hand markets:

  • Clothing and accessories for the whole family
  • Tableware, earthenware, and decorative objects
  • Toys and games for children
  • Books, vinyl records, and collectibles
  • Small furniture and tools
  • Trinkets, curiosities, and souvenirs

Tarascon and Beaucaire: two cities, one river

The Rhône separates Tarascon from its Gard neighbor, Beaucaire, with which it shares a millennia-old history of trade and exchange. The two castles have faced each other for centuries, witnesses to the rivalry between Provence and Languedoc. The Beaucaire fair, one of the most important in Europe from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, attracted merchants from all over the Mediterranean basin. Today, the two cities are connected by a bridge and form a remarkable heritage ensemble on the banks of the Rhône. The Tarascon car boot sale is part of this age-old trading tradition.

A Provençal May 1st

May 1st is a special date for car boot sales in Provence. The spring weather, generally mild and sunny in the Bouches-du-Rhône, invites outdoor strolls. Tarascon, a few kilometers from Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, is an ideal stop for a day combining treasure hunting, heritage, and discovery of the Rhone region of Provence. Visitors can extend their visit with a walk along the Rhône riverbanks or explore the old town and its medieval streets.
