An abbey-village flea market

La Celle is a unique Var village, famed for its 12th-century royal Benedictine abbey — today a prestigious hotel-restaurant (Alain Ducasse's Relais & Châteaux). Nestled in vines and olive groves south of Brignoles, it keeps a preserved village feel with old stones, quiet alleys and fountains. Each summer, the town holds its annual flea market, traditionally around 15 August (Assumption, patronal feast).

Date matters: 15 August is peak summer holiday in the Var, with maximum tourism. The flea market fits into a wider festival setup (masses, balls, village meals, games) creating full festive atmosphere, not just commerce.

Traditional format

Simple proven format: square stalls, morning setup, sales till mid-afternoon. Mostly local sellers with some touring dealers. Friendly Provençal mood, refreshment and catering usually by festival committee.

La Celle abbey, village jewel

12th-century Benedictine foundation, listed historic monument. Visits (outside hotel activity) reveal cloister, abbey church and restored medieval vegetable garden. The flea market is a great chance to combine hunting, heritage and gastronomy (starred restaurant in the abbey).

Access

From Brignoles via D405 (5 min only). Roadside parking. Hat, water, sunscreen — 15 August can be scorching. Cash essential. Cafés and shops open.

A character village in Provence Verte

Despite small size, a must-see. Abbey history, côtes de Provence terroir (including historic 'La Celle-aux-Fleurs' vines), Brignoles proximity make it ideal for a full-day culture + hunt + gastronomy outing.
