A flea in a Most Beautiful Village of France

Vouvant is one of Vendée's tourist gems: 'Most Beautiful Villages of France' label (very selective national distinction). 800-inhabitant medieval village on a promontory above Mervent-Vouvant forest, draws thousands yearly. Big annual flea for over two decades. 22nd edition: Sunday 29 June 2025. 23rd expected 2026 (Sunday 28 June, TBC).

Benefits from Vouvant's exceptional setting: sellers in paved medieval streets, around the Mélusine tower (12th-c. keep), Romanesque church, ramparts. Bargain-hunting here = postcard-scenery tourism experience in itself.

Mélusine legend

Vouvant is inseparable from the medieval fairy Mélusine. Myth: she built the imposing tower dominating the village, plus regional castles (Lusignan, Tiffauges, Parthenay). Perfectly preserved tower — one of the finest medieval towers in western France. Visitable, panoramic view from top over the forest.

Quality flea

Prestigious setting attracts quality sellers: brocanteurs, collectors, amateur antique dealers. Prices generally higher than a rural flea but quality matches. Great chance to find rare pieces in a unique setting.

Around: state forest, south-Vendée green lung. 5,000 ha, rocks, Vendée and Mère valleys, cliffs, Mervent dam. Exceptional natural setting. Combine flea with hiking, water activities on Mervent lake, Mervent-Vouvant wildlife park.

Tips

Come very early (7am) for two reasons: beat others, enjoy magical morning light on medieval village. Comfy shoes (paved streets), cash, sturdy bag, camera. Parking around village, walk in (centre sometimes vehicle-closed during event).
