Spring car boot sale in the heart of the Doubs plateau town
The Valdahon spring car boot sale is one of the highlights of the season in this town of 5,000 inhabitants, capital of the Portes du Haut-Doubs. Every third Sunday in April, private sellers and bargain hunters meet for a day of treasure hunting in the streets of this garrison and market town on the first Doubs plateau. Clothing, furniture, and various objects liven up the aisles in a friendly spring atmosphere.
Valdahon (25800), the capital of the Portes du Haut-Doubs community of communes, marks the arrival of spring with its large seasonal car boot sale. A garrison town hosting the 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment, Valdahon is also a commercial and service hub on the first Doubs plateau, 47 km from Besançon. Its spring car boot sale attracts families from the entire catchment area: Valdahon plateau, Plateau des Mille Étangs, Loue valley, and Pontarlier basin.
The sellers at the spring car boot sale offer the typical wide variety of these events: adult and children's clothing, second-hand furniture, crockery, books, toys, and decorative objects. The tradition of the spring car boot sale symbolically marks the big house clean-out and the circulation of unused treasures accumulated during the winter. In Valdahon, where winter can be long and harsh on the plateau, this spring event is particularly anticipated.
At an average altitude of 700 meters, Valdahon benefits from a remarkable natural environment. The Forêt de Chaux, the "reculées" (karstic depressions), and the karst springs of the first plateau surround the town. The Valdahon Military Camp, one of the largest in France, gives it a unique identity. Visitors to the car boot sale can discover this atypical town and its surroundings, between Franche-Comté gastronomy (Comté, Morteau, Mont d'Or cheeses) and plateau landscapes.
