Charity bargain hunting on the Belle Époque villa coast
The Mers-les-Bains Firefighters Flea Market takes place every spring in this Picardy seaside resort famous for its Belle Époque villas. Organized by the local Firefighters Association, it brings together private individuals and visitors for a friendly day facing the English Channel. Bric-à-brac, tableware, clothes, books, toys and trinkets are on display in an exceptional seaside setting.
Every year in May, the Mers-les-Bains Firefighters Association organizes its annual flea market. The event has become a faithful fixture in the local calendar, allowing volunteer firefighters to fund their social activities and community actions.
Mers-les-Bains holds a special place on the Picardy coast: the town is famous throughout France for its seafront lined with colourful Belle Époque villas, listed as historic monuments. Organizing a flea market in such a setting offers bargain hunters a unique experience: combining hunting with a walk on the beach facing the chalk cliffs of Le Tréport.
Exhibitors — local residents, neighbours and holidaymakers — offer the classic range: clothes, tableware, toys, books, vinyls, small decoration, trinkets. The firefighters' refreshment bar, much appreciated, offers drinks, fries and sausages throughout the day.
Seaside resort of the Picardy Alabaster Coast, Mers-les-Bains together with Le Tréport and Eu forms a remarkable urban ensemble on the Normandy border. Bargain hunters often take advantage of their visit to discover the villa district and climb the funicular linking the seafront to the plateau.
The firefighters ensure efficient organization and a warm welcome. This flea market, with its festive character, embodies their local roots.
