Bargain hunting in the heart of a Provençal town
The Lorgues flea market and jumble sale takes over Place Trussy in the heart of this medieval Haut-Var town. Private sellers and dealers set out their stalls beneath century-old plane trees, in the typical frame of a Provençal village square. A favourite for Dracénie hunters and antique lovers crossing the wine country, with its stone houses and paved lanes.
Lorgues, between Draguignan and Carcès in the Haut-Var, is known for its preserved historic centre, its Tuesday market and its concentration of Côtes de Provence estates. The flea market on Place Trussy makes full use of the setting : century-old plane trees casting shade, warm-toned Provençal façades, the collegiate church of Saint-Martin just steps away.
The mixed format is the trademark of this event. Along the same aisles you find private sellers clearing a loft – toys, books, tableware, clothing, small furniture – alongside more specialised dealers with choice pieces : Provençal furniture, old faience tableware, copperware, kitchen items, embroidered linen. The blend gives the market real interest : a hunter can as easily snap up a two-euro find as enter a serious negotiation on a character piece.
The setting shapes the stock : tools from Provençal farming life (small barrels, baskets, old pruners), domestic items with Mediterranean motifs, regional books and old Var maps. The mild climate and the beauty of the centre invite a longer visit : café terrace, a wander in the alleys, a stop at the imposing collegiate church.
Lorgues sits within a dense network of Haut-Var and Provence Verte markets, complementing those of Salernes, Aups and Cotignac and drawing residents of the plateau, day-trippers from Toulon and tourists staying in the Provençal countryside.
Come early for shade and cool. Combine with the Tuesday weekly market nearby. Budget time for a village walk after the market.
