A village steeped in history

Lachalade is best known for its Cistercian abbey founded in the 11th and 12th centuries, listed as a stop on the Way of Saint James. The village was on the front line during the First World War and was almost entirely destroyed by bombing. The abbey, converted into a military hospital, was relatively spared and is today the village's main monument. The commune also houses the ossuary of Haute Chevauchée, a national necropolis, and a monument to the Garibaldi volunteers, poignant witnesses to the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers in the Argonne battles.
