Annual charity flea market organized by the L'Arche community in Rouvres, Seine-et-Marne
The L'Arche de Rouvres Flea Market is an annual event like no other, organized by the L'Arche community, founded by Jean Vanier, which brings together in the same living space people with and without intellectual disabilities. Every year at the end of May, this charity flea market opens its doors to the public within the Rouvres community, offering a unique opportunity to bargain hunt while supporting a remarkable human and spiritual work. An event marked by conviviality, fraternity, and commitment.
The L'Arche de Rouvres Flea Market is not a flea market like any other. Organized every year by the L'Arche community, it brings together visitors coming both to bargain hunt and to discover this unique community in a spirit of sharing and fraternity. The stalls offer furniture, tableware, clothing, books, decorative items, and all kinds of trinkets in a particularly warm and human atmosphere. All or part of the proceeds supports the community's activities and thus directly contributes to the lives of the people welcomed there.
L'Arche is an international federation of communities founded in 1964 by the Canadian philosopher and humanist Jean Vanier (1928-2019). His project: to create living spaces where people with intellectual disabilities and so-called able-bodied people live together, in a relationship of equality and friendship. L'Arche de Rouvres, located in Seine-et-Marne, is part of this tradition and has been welcoming people with disabilities for several decades who find there a home, friends, and activities adapted to their abilities. The annual flea market is one of the gatherings that allows the community to share its daily life with the general public and to raise funds for its activities.
Visitors who push open the doors of L'Arche de Rouvres for its annual flea market discover much more than a bargain hunting event: they experience a striking human experience. Members of the community, people with and without disabilities, actively participate in welcoming, running the stalls, and animating the day. Exchanges are marked by simplicity, smiles, and kindness. Each purchase then takes on an additional dimension: it is no longer just a find that one takes home, it is also the memory of an encounter and the pride of having contributed to a good cause.
Rouvres is a rural municipality in northwest Seine-et-Marne, located in an agricultural and forest environment typical of the region. Its discreet and preserved character makes it an ideal setting to welcome the L'Arche community, which has found here the space and calm necessary for its shared living project. The village, surrounded by fields and woods, also offers visitors the opportunity for a bucolic walk before or after their visit to the flea market.
At a time when the values of inclusion, solidarity, and respect for differences are becoming increasingly important, the L'Arche de Rouvres Flea Market embodies these commitments with force and simplicity. It reminds us that bargain hunting can be much more than a consumer activity: it is also an opportunity to meet others, share a moment, and support a meaningful cause. Every year, many loyal visitors return as much for the atmosphere as for the objects. New visitors generally leave transformed by this singular human experience.
The L'Arche de Rouvres Flea Market takes place on Sunday, May 31, 2026 within the community, in Rouvres. Admission is free for visitors. Part of the proceeds is donated to the operation of the community. Car access recommended; contact the community for more practical information.
