Flea market for seamstresses and sewing, haberdashery, and creative hobbies exchange in Venelles, near Aix-en-Provence
La Boîte à Couture de Venelles is an annual exchange dedicated to the world of sewing, haberdashery, and creative hobbies, organized in this Provençal commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône region, about ten kilometers from Aix-en-Provence. In the form of a seamstresses' flea market, the event brings together exhibitors and enthusiasts around fabrics, yarns, fine haberdashery, patterns, embroidery materials, knitting, patchwork, and second-hand creative supplies. A meeting eagerly awaited by lovers of fiber arts in the heart of the Pays d'Aix.
Every autumn, Venelles hosts La Boîte à Couture, a seamstresses' flea market entirely dedicated to sewing, haberdashery, and creative hobbies. This themed event brings together fiber art enthusiasts from all over the Pays d'Aix and neighboring communes for a day of treasure hunting, good deals, and sharing around their common passion. Exhibitors, both individuals and professionals, clear out their workshops and offer the public a varied selection of sewing supplies and creative materials at affordable prices.
Venelles (13770) is a Provençal commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, perched between 254 and 442 meters above sea level at the eastern end of the Chaîne de la Trévaresse, about ten kilometers north of Aix-en-Provence. Its territory is crossed by la Touloubre, a 59-kilometer coastal river, and by several small streams that irrigate a cultivated plain where vines of the Coteaux-d'Aix-en-Provence appellation thrive. The village bears the memory of a Celtic-Ligurian occupation dating back to the 4th century BC, followed by a documented Gallo-Roman presence. Devastated successively by the Lombards in 574 and the Saracens in the 8th-9th centuries, the town was rebuilt and entrusted to the Artaud lords in the 13th century. The earthquake of June 11, 1909, the most destructive Provence experienced in the 20th century, destroyed the old village of Venelles-le-Haut, whose ruins still bear witness to this tumultuous past. Among the personalities associated with Venelles are the sculptor Louis-Félix Chabaud (1824-1902), Grand Prix de Rome in 1848, and the actor Fernand Charpin (1887-1944), the unforgettable Panisse in Marcel Pagnol's Marseilles trilogy.
La Boîte à Couture de Venelles stands out from traditional car boot sales due to its themed and specialized nature. Exhibitors exclusively offer items related to sewing and creative hobbies:
La Boîte à Couture de Venelles is part of a virtuous approach to reuse and the circular economy. Supplies, fabrics, and creative materials that accumulate in cupboards and workshops find a second life here with seamstresses and creators who know how to make the most of them. Beyond treasure hunting, the exchange of advice, tips, and techniques among enthusiasts makes this day a true place of transmission and conviviality. Venelles, a dynamic commune whose population has grown from 623 inhabitants in 1962 to over 8,000 residents, cultivates a rich associative fabric in the field of creative hobbies and sewing, giving this event a solid local foundation and a loyal audience.
