Wood-fired bread and flea market in the Loudunais
Ranton's Bread Festival and Great Flea Market returns Sunday 12 April 2026, by association BOUTABOU. Bread sold from 10am from Ranton's traditional wood-fired oven, food, drinks and large flea market through village streets. A Loudunais classic blending heritage and village conviviality.
Ranton is a small commune of about 450 inhabitants in the Loudunais, north Vienne, about 10 km from Loudun near Bournand. Every spring, BOUTABOU association runs the Bread Festival and Great Flea Market, honouring local heritage — notably the village's traditional bread oven — while livening the streets with a large flea market. 2026: Sunday 12 April 2026.
Ranton's restored traditional bread oven, maintained by BOUTABOU volunteers, is the main feature. Fired very early, it lets volunteer bakers cook breads, fouaces and other wood-fired specialties all day. Sales start at 10am until stocks last. Visitors buy still-warm bread straight from the oven and enjoy it on site with local produce.
Around the bread festival, a large flea market fills village streets. Locals and Loudunais regulars offer bric-a-brac, clothes, toys, crockery, books, small furniture, curiosities. The warm-bread + chine combination gives Ranton a distinct flavour. Relaxed atmosphere alternating between stalls and oven snack breaks.
BOUTABOU is the local association behind the event. Volunteers work year-round on the oven, the festival and village animation. Embodies the community spirit that keeps small Loudunais villages alive: more than running an oven, perpetuating know-how, social bonds and local identity.
Ranton belongs to the Loudunais, strong-identity territory at Poitou, Anjou and Touraine borders. A few km from Loudun (historic sub-prefecture famous for Urbain Grandier 1634 affair and Théophraste Renaudot, father of French journalism). Modest heritage — church, tuffeau-stone houses.
Extend to Loudun (Tour Carrée, Charbonneau-Lassay museum), Bournand, Messemé, or the Saumurois (châteaux, troglodytes, wine cellars). Loudunais crossroads position eases regional discovery.
Ranton's Bread Festival illustrates what volunteer associations can bring alive in villages of a few hundred. By reviving a forgotten oven and adding a federating flea market, BOUTABOU creates an annual popular rendezvous. An example of rural dynamism.
